August Activity: Homemade Litterboom and a Pre-Spring Stream Clean

We’ve been keeping the momentum going through winter by improving the litter catching capacity up-stream of the Westlake River in our village, as well as an initial clearing of alien vegetation in one of the Kerner Park streams.

The litterboom was constructed with rope, pool noodles and wrapped in fabric to strengthen and secure the pool noodle foam. Beneath the surface some fencing was attached to help prevent heavier objects from being pulled under the litterboom, while still allowing space for any wildlife to move.

It was placed about 70 metres from the Steenberg road bridge and has so far done a good job of catching rubbish and plant debris.

We also made a start at cleaning one of the three streams in Kerner Park, to allow the water to move through without stagnating, especially as the warmer months near. Some vegetation was left to act as a filter and to provide habitat for wildlife. (Before photo below, after photo at top of page)

We will likely do another clean of the this stream just to keep it manageable, in the next month or two, as well as clearing a bit in the stream nearest to the Westlake River (eastern side of Kerner Park). Thanks also to some of the neighbourhood children who also helped out by clearing one of the streams a few weeks before this.

In other news, we helped out again at lower Zandvlei with a shoreline clean-up organized by the Clean Green Muizenberg team.
