Our Objectives
The objective of the project is to support the City of Cape Town (CoCT) in the management and restoration of the Westlake River and surrounding areas, thereby contributing to the ongoing conservation of the Zandvlei estuary.
The project will focus on the section of the Westlake River between Steenberg Road and the Main Road/ Chenel Way bridge, as well as the tributary streams running through Kerner Park.
Proposed interventions will include regular removal of solid waste from the waterways and surrounding areas, the systematic eradication of invasive alien vegetation, and the reestablishment/ regeneration of locally indigenous vegetation in key areas within the river and along its banks, as well as the decanalisation and restoration of pilot area of the Kerner Park streams.
The project will also include planting of indigenous trees and vegetation along Chenel Way, as well as the installation of pathways, benches and tables to support community access and enjoyment of the area.
Together, these actions will enhance the functional and aesthetic value of the area, and contribute to the conservation of habitats for a wide range of species, including Cape Clawless Otter, Western Leopard toad, as well as numerous bird species such as, among others, African spoonbill, red-knobbed coot, reed cormorant, white breasted cormorant, grey heron, malachite kingfisher and giant kingfisher – all of which have been spotted in the river.
Below are the three founding members, and what we bring to the organisation:
Hannes Kok
Hannes is a Climate Change and Environmental Consultant who primarily develops climate change adaptation and sustainability project proposals for UN agencies such as UNDP and UNEP. His hands-on approach has been key to getting the project going and in helping us build connections.
Anthony McLennan
Anthony’s skills as a photographer, and his background in media, make him an ideal Communications Manager. A resident of the Lakeside/ Muizenberg area for 12-years and an almost daily walker around Zandvlei, he is well placed to understand the various challenges, terrain and overall picture.
Alex Sparg
Alex is a Professional Landscape Architect (SACLAP 20428) whose knowledge of ecosystems and plants as well as regulatory matters make her a valuable member of the team.
