New Waders - Big Litter Removal!

With our new equipment, we were able to access the river much more easily, and removed a bunch of litter and pollution.

We also started on clearing some of the invasive plants which are growing in the river - fortunately these are not out of control yet and we will return soon to clear some more.

The hot-spot for litter and pollution is the section next to the Steenberg road bridge, and up until our litterboom, which is situated about 70 metres downstream. Downstream from the litterboom, the river is pretty much pristine as far as litter is concerned.

Some of what we pulled out was clearly large items specifically dumped in the river, including blankets, as well as bags of objects. The rest was mainly takeaway food containers, bottles and packets.

Clearly there is an issue around the bridge, and someone we spoke to who legally trades in the area and observes it daily, informed us of the following:

- The people who sit on the bridge waiting for work frequently litter in the river.

- They have also tried to kill/ have injured ducks.

- Other (informal) traders, use the river as a hideout to consume drugs.

- People have been spotted sleeping in the bushes at the far end of the field (situated alongside Steenberg rd), behind the houses in Orchard Village.
