This past week has seen us step up our efforts in managing pollution in the river, invasive plants in the streams and weeds alongside the river garden.
The warmer weather has resulted in rapid plant growth in the streams; our goal is to manage the situation by removing sections of invasive plants, leaving the rest to act as filters for pollutants (there was a recent paint spill in the stream).
Meanwhile in the river, our litterboom system close to the Steenberg road bridge has been working really well - we were able to collect close to two bags full of litter which had been contained by the litterboom rather than being washed further down the river.
Apart from watering, weeding and adding more plants to our riverside garden, we have also been working hard to remove weeds from the grassy area which runs from the entrance to the village/ alongside the river, up until the Camargue bridge.
Removing more weeds should enable the grass to further grow, and hopefully we can make some kind of plan to get a bit of watering....it will make a much better impression to people entering the village, especially when he trees and shrubs get bigger, and as we continue to add more plants and flowers.
As can be seen in the photos below (taken a year apart in the second week of October 2024 and 2025), the area is looking a lot better. We also plan to do more work in the river - taking down invasive trees growing on the banks, and trimming back reeds in a coupe of lotions to allow access to the river.
